Setting Health Related Goals - What Non-Weight Based Goals Should You Pursue in 2025?

It’s that time of year again—New Year, new goals, and a fresh start! Weight loss is often the default resolution for many. If you’ve set this goal for yourself (yet again this year), we've got a hot take for you!

It’s easy to get caught up in focusing solely on our weight and how we look, but what if we take a step back and think a little bigger?

Health is about so much more than a number on the scale. In fact, focusing on non-weight-based goals can be way more empowering, sustainable, and—let’s be real—fun. 🎉

Let’s talk about how you can still work toward the changes you want but in a way that prioritizes progress you can sustain, enjoyment along the way, and a true sense of accomplishment! ✨

Why Shift Away From Weight-Based Goals? 🌟

First, let’s get this out of the way: weight can be influenced by so many factors outside your control. (Hi, genetics, hormones, and stress to name a few! 🙃)

When we pin all our progress on the scale, it’s easy to feel defeated—even when you’re making huge strides in other areas of your health. Instead, by chasing goals that don’t rely on the scale, you can:

  • Celebrate progress: Small, consistent actions add up in big ways.

  • Build habits you’re proud of: Focus on what you can control, like moving your body or improving your nutrition. 🥗

  • Actually enjoy the process: When the goal isn’t tied to your weight, it’s easier to stay motivated and have fun along the way.

Outcome vs. Process Goals: A Quick Refresher 📝

Now, let’s talk about two types of goals you might set: outcome goals and process goals.

  • Outcome Goals focus on a specific result. For example, running a 5k, lifting a certain weight, or losing 10 lbs. 🏁

  • Process Goals focus on the actions that get you there. For example, training three times a week to prepare for a 5k, or training 3x per week using progressive overload to increase the amount of weight you can lift. 🏋️

Here’s the thing: outcome goals are exciting, but they’re not always 100% in your control. That’s why process goals are so powerful—they’re about what you can do today to feel successful and build momentum. Plus, they often lead to those big wins over time.

Non-Weight-Loss Goals to Chase in 2025 🎯

If you’re ready to set some goals that focus on how you feel and what you can do, here are some ideas to inspire you:

1️⃣ Get Stronger – Strength train at least 3x per week. Feeling stronger makes everything from carrying groceries to chasing after kids a breeze.

2️⃣ Move More – Aim for 8,000-10,000 steps daily. Regular movement is great for your heart and your head.

3️⃣ Improve Nutrition – Work toward eating at least 25-35g of fiber each day. Your gut (and energy levels) will thank you!

4️⃣ Prioritize Rest – Sleep is where the magic happens. Aim for 8 hours of quality Zzzs to feel refreshed and ready.

5️⃣ Stay Hydrated – Drinking at least 2 liters of water daily can do wonders for your energy, digestion, and skin.

6️⃣ Reduce Screen Time – Cut back by just 30 minutes a day and see how much more time you have for hobbies, friends, or mindfulness.

7️⃣ Reduce Stress – Find what works for you: journaling, listening to music, practicing mindfulness, or just carving out some "me time."

8️⃣ Focus on Consistency – Progress over perfection, always. Small steps taken consistently will get you further than trying to go all-out all the time.

How Non-Weight-Based Goals Lead to Lasting Change 💡

When you focus on goals like these, you’re not just improving your health—you’re building habits that last. And here’s the cool part: over time, these habits might even lead to changes in your body composition or other outcomes, but that becomes a byproduct, not the main event.

More importantly, you’ll:

  • Feel empowered by the positive choices you’re making every day.

  • Find more joy in the journey (because let’s be honest, we all just want to have a little fun along the way).

  • Build confidence knowing you’re creating a lifestyle that works for you. 💪

Start Small, Stay Consistent 🌱

So, what now? Start with one or two goals that really speak to you. Focus on the small actions you can take today, and let the results unfold naturally.

Health isn’t just about how you look. It’s about how you feel, what you can do, and how you’re taking care of yourself - none of which have to do with the number on the scale.

Let's make 2025 the year you chase goals that truly empower and inspire you. 🌟
